Lifts and Jacks

In the automobile repair industry, lifting jacks are commonly used to hoist a vehicle off the ground. They employ either mechanical or hydraulic force, depending on the jack used. For small tasks like tuning the exhaust system or changing the oil, a trolley jack can provide a simple solution for elevating either end of the vehicle. Trolley jacks are small, convenient and yet powerful with lifting capacities ranging from 2 to 10 tons. While working under a vehicle it is advisable to use jack stands that stabilize the trolley jack. In case of an accidental release, the stands prevent the vehicle from collapsing on the mechanic working below.

While trolley jacks are handy for household or minor motor mechanic work, larger auto repair centers and garages use vehicle lifts. A vehicle lift is almost always hydraulic and may or may not be portable. When used in combination with a set of tire ramps, a vehicle can be easily maneuvered onto the lift. Servicing, tuning or simple maintenance is made much easier with a vehicle lift. Lifting jacks come is a variety of designs for use in different environments and situations. Bottle jacks are used horizontally and can provide good leverage in tight spots. A transmission jack is specific for vehicular operations on the transmission or gear box. A farm jack is a versatile jack that has uses beyond its original application of lifting tractors and forklifts.
